Minneapolis femme-core band tell it like it is on their singles collection!
Hailing from Minneapolis (USA), Spit Takes are causing quite a stir on the area’s local femme-scene. They describe themselves as a “femme/queer/ally post-punk with zero fucks given”, so my interest has been well and truly piqued. Whiplass Records are big supporters of their local burgeoning femme-scene, and this is their very first album release: ‘Teeth‘ collects together all the band’s EPs to date, along with an unreleased live track. Spit Takes formed in 2023, and tell us, “The songs were written in the years of post-‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Me Too’, leading up to the brutalities of the ‘I.C.E’ occupation in 2026.” This band (understandably) has much to say, and they’re not afraid to say it.

‘Joyride‘ owns an infectious post-punk guitar line and it’s a song that appears to be about how women of a certain age can fall victim to stereotypes and pigeonholing. It’s a defiant song where Spit Takes shout, “I should’ve been less punk….I should’ve been less drunk”, before proclaiming, “Not this time!” A bass intro leads us into ‘Hogwash‘ which I believe is about the least honest people that they’ve come across in their friend group. It’s a punk rock toe-tapper of a song, where the band say mysteriously in angry unison, “What about the last six months?!”
The brilliantly titled ‘God Bless (Holy Tits)‘ is up next. It’s a Riot Grrrl anthem of a song, with a melodic guitar riff and a celebratory chant of, wait for it…. “My titties are holy!” This is definitely not a song for the Sunday night Songs Of Praise crowd… I believe ‘Ex-Triggers‘ is another popular song in the band’s repertoire. It has personal lyrics that cover the triggering things ex-partners may have said to you, as they inexplicably think that they know you better than you know yourself. It feels to me to be a song about gaslighting?
This album collection’s namesake song, ‘Teeth‘, has a driving and slightly gothic guitar riff. It’s a bit of a Riot Grrrl anthem in the making, where the band warn you they will “chew you up and spit you out”, before informing us that “kitty’s got teeth!” The song also features a nice bass and drum breakdown, and I was reminded of the UK’s late 70’s post-punks, Department S:
‘Badass‘ is a self-celebratory punk rock song with a mean riff. It’s a fun tune about unity. “You’ve got my back, and I’ve got yours,” they state, and I can’t argue with that. The final studio recording on the album is called ‘Bootlick‘, which I suspect is about the city’s takeover by the government’s makeshift taskforce. “God’s got an army,” Spit Takes say, as the band rightfully voice their mistrust of these thugs in uniform. The last track on the album is an exclusive one, called ‘Get Off‘.’ It’s a live recording, and no, it’s not a Prince cover, but it sounds like a lot of fun all the same.
If you like your punk rock to be feminist, queer-core and raucous, with the emphasis on having a good time, then look no further than ‘Teeth‘. This album, dare I say it, has bite! (shameless pun intended).

I have been writing reviews for Brighton & Hove News, and more recently Vive Le Rock magazine for a few years now. Previously, I could be spotted playing drums for many a band over the decades. A noisy habit developed whilst wearing short trousers at school, and one that has had me touring around the UK and Europe. Punk rock is my life, but I am also quite eclectic. I am an avid gig go-er and music devourer, and can feel out of sorts if a gig date is not on the horizon. I have also been known to put gigs on myself in order to fill those gaps.
