A fun and successful benefit gig with a lot of incredible bands!
This gig certainly was a fun one! And of course, an important one, with all ticket money going to two incredible charities – Refuge and Mermaids. Refuge is an organisation helping women and children victims of domestic violence. Mermaids is an organisation supporting trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families. Weeze Cooper of local band Not The Face! organised this whole gig, and what a fantastic job she did! I was very honoured when she asked me to both review and work the door for this amazing benefit gig, it was an absolute pleasure to do both.
First up, we had solo artist Emily Flea (who you may also have seen on bass duties with Rubella Ballet, and on guitar and vocals with Daffodildos). This was my first time seeing them, and what a performance they put on! Their set was so beautiful, soulful, and harmonising with their vocals and acoustic guitar. Some of their songs have powerful meanings behind them, being both LGBTQIA+ friendly and relatable, and some were just very catchy and funny, including my new favourite song ‘Shut Up And Have A Wank’, which I think you can guess why that one is my favourite! Their set also included ‘Selling Out’, ‘Dream’, and ‘No Pride’. I’m not usually a massive fan of solo acts, however Emily did such an amazing job and I would really love to see them play again for sure!
They also announced they are doing the Berlin Marathon in September for the Outside Project, which is an LGBTQIA+ homeless organisation based in London, so go and sponsor Emily if you can!
Next up we had Spit Sisters. This was my first time seeing them as well, I really enjoyed their set a lot. They were powerful, loud, catchy, and hypnotic, all at once! I love how most of them were wearing Hawaiian shirts, it was so unique and different. Their set included songs ‘Weak’, ‘Str8 World’, and ‘The Herpes Song’, and they even treated us all to a cover of The Distillers’ ‘Dismantle Me’, which was just brilliant! I don’t always enjoy covers, but Spit Sisters played it impressively! This is another band I have added to my list to go see play again.
Now for a band I have seen before – Not The Face! I love this band a lot. They are always entertaining to watch. They got the crowd dancing and singing along to tracks from their recent album ‘How Vulgar’, which I reviewed, including ‘What We Do’ and ‘Not The Face!’. And of course, they played my absolute favourite ‘Let ‘Em Die’, which I obviously had to sing along to! They treated us to 3 new songs they have been working on – ‘No Shit Sherlock (Stockholm Syndrome)’, ‘Someone Like Me’, and ‘Voluntary Redundancy’. Powerful vocals, sick guitar riffs, strong basslines, and impressive drum beats, which is very inspiring to me as I’m learning drums myself; what more could you ask for from a band like this?! I need to see Not The Face! more, having only seen them 3 times so far. This amount needs to increase big time!
And lastly, to end this amazing gig, we had another band I have seen before – Yur Mum – another band I really love! I never get tired of seeing them. They know how to put on a show, getting the crowd excited and dancing! Their set was incredible and included some popular tracks, including ‘Tropical Fuzz’, ‘Say Say’, and ‘Same Igual’. I love watching Fabio’s drumming, it’s incredible and inspiring! And Anelise’s bass playing and vocals are powerful and mesmerising! She even came into the crowd briefly near the end of their last song ‘Je Ne Sais Pas’ and fist bumped people in the crowd, including myself which was sick as fuck! This band always brings the party vibes, making me not want to go home. I always have a lot of fun watching this band and never want the night to end! Yur Mum are lovely, friendly people you just want to hang out with afterwards too. I can’t wait to see them again!
Honestly, this night has been one of the best ones I’ve had in a while. I didn’t want it to end, and I really didn’t want to go home. I always love gigs in Brighton, especially at The Pipeline, it’s one of my favourite venues. They have just secured full community ownership through the initiative by Music Venue Properties – amazing news!
I highly recommend checking out all the bands, you will not be disappointed! Please support their gigs, their music, and them as people!
