The tuneful Anarcho-Punk legends spread love and hope with their much anticipated new release
A particularly big fixture in the anarcho-punk scene of the early 80’s, North London’s Omega Tribe were much more tuneful than many of their peers, which really made them stand out from the rest. The band had ceased to exist by the time 1985 came along, but in 2016, they decided to re-form, after much interest was shown, in the UK and beyond.
Omega Tribe are certainly prolific nowadays, and after a lengthy hiatus following their early 80’s heyday, this is their fourth release on Grow Your Own Records. Titled ‘Power Pop Punk Rock‘ it does pretty much what it says on the tin! This release is indeed ‘poppy’ with echoes of the 1960’s/70’s running through its centre.
Omega Tribe are currently a 3-piece, consisting of Hugh Vivian on guitar and vocals, Emma Page on drums and vocals, and Rav Dano on bass and vocals. Their new material is political, but at the same time personal, tackling issues where other punk bands sometimes fear to tread – relationships, diversity and culture. They also hope to spread a message of love; “Love as resistance, connection and solidarity”, and who can argue with that in these difficult times? The band are also very focused on the trans community, and on promoting safe and inclusive spaces and events.
‘Power Pop Punk Rock‘ kicks off with the instantly memorable ‘Anti-Government Forces‘, followed by ‘Goddess‘, which goes into full glam rock territory. The gloriously sarcastic ‘Essential Workers‘ follows shortly afterwards:
The political messages on ‘Power Pop Punk Rock‘ are also complemented by a few love songs, but don’t let that put you off! ‘How I Love You‘ is especially good, with its melancholic strains of violin. The final song ‘One Step‘is a Ska-based, proving that this is probably the most melodic, socially conscious punk album, this side of Newtown Neurotics.

I have been writing reviews for Brighton & Hove News, and more recently Vive Le Rock magazine for a few years now. Previously, I could be spotted playing drums for many a band over the decades. A noisy habit developed whilst wearing short trousers at school, and one that has had me touring around the UK and Europe. Punk rock is my life, but I am also quite eclectic. I am an avid gig go-er and music devourer, and can feel out of sorts if a gig date is not on the horizon. I have also been known to put gigs on myself in order to fill those gaps.
