Colombia's finest crossover thrash export make their London debut!
Welcome to part 2 (following last Friday) of an unintended three-part crossover thrash gig odyssey, courtesy of yours truly. Relax, I’m not trying to turn Punktuation into a metal fanzine – the gig calendar’s just worked out that way. Besides, if you can listen to Colombian quintet Psychomosher’s breakneck-speed ‘I.F.H.B.M.’ and tell me there’s no punk influence there…then we wanna know what you’ve been smoking.
“Show me some violence!” implores the guitarist of Forced To Run. Alas, he doesn’t get many takers, but the heavy, downtuned riffs and bleak atmospherics of ‘Deceit’ and ‘Traitor’ at least deserve the couple of folks periodically windmilling away down the front. It’s their second gig with their new frontman, who only knows half the set, leaving the aforementioned guitarist to take over vocal duties. He’s clearly not thrilled to be anchored to his mic stand, but the songs are definitely there, and we’re looking forward to seeing them truly hit their stride.
Metallic hardcore quartet Emergency Broadcast are missing their bassist tonight, due to a sinus infection, and although his thunderous low-end groove is missed, there’s something undeniably cool about seeing the band absolutely crush it as a three piece on the likes of ‘I Am The Prisoner’ and ‘Countdown To Extinction’. It’s heartening that folks present listen carefully to vocalist Mel as she introduces each track, and the relatively small size of the crowd adds to the sense of intimacy. Still, if you saw Emergency Broadcast tonight and were impressed, trust us when we say that they’re even better at full strength. Superb.
We’ve been blasting Psychomosher’s excellent ‘Trapped Into The Madness Vortex’ debut album in anticipation of this evening, and my goodness, they do it justice – going straight for the jugular on the opening title track and not letting up for the remainder of a gloriously tight and frenetic set. Scorching renditions of ‘Panico’ and ‘Purgatorio’ blast past with all the subtlety of a speeding freight train, and are delivered in a sweaty, joyous mass of headbanging, and serious guitar shredding, whilst livewire vocalist Maria’s hardcore scream keeps things anchored firmly in punk territory.
Their set seems to fly by all too quickly, and by the time they close with ‘Now You See Us’, it’s safe to say our air guitars are pretty much worn out and need re-tuning. Latin American punk/hardcore/thrash bands (and fans) have long had a reputation for being as devoted and enthusiastic as they come, and tonight Psychomosher continue that tradition in fine style.
