Marie reminisces on her Podcast's first season, plus forthcoming record to raise funds for animal rescue
Happy New Year everyone!!! I was celebrating with a Jack Daniels in one hand, and as always, with a safety pin through my heart and fire in my soul. I am Marie and this feature pulls back the curtain on some of my Punk Rock Creatives Podcast interviews. With our first compilation of music, dropping through DIY punk label Dammit Records to raise funds for Protected Paws Animal Rescue, there is no better time to start writing an article.
Every time I hit ‘record’ for Punk Rock Creatives, I never know where the conversations will go – being neurospicy can take the chat down a random path – especially if I’m having a day where I am struggling to get my words out. I’ve had the best chats, some being over 3 hours long. Steve Battershill from Lost Cherrees and I got so lost in conversation his lovely wife Trin came to check that he hadn’t had keeled over, after we had been chatting for just over two hours!
It’s been brilliant to chatting to old friends and making new ones. I’ve met some of the best people over the past few months because of the podcast. I also learned how passionate Al Stone from Ambition Demolition is about Animal Rights, I’ve known him from the gig circuit for years and knew he supported animal rights, but never knew how passionate he was about the subject, and that he’s an activist too.
I nearly threw in the towel when Peesh LoGOz’s interview (episode 13) wouldn’t load and crashed 3 times – was it unlucky 13, or the fact Peesh has released an EP about serial killers, and they were haunting the digital waves? Sam from Amongst Strangers, Andrew Ray Keys from Bullitz 23, Fiona Duncan from Slalom D, artist David Apps, Gyspy Lee from Gypsy Pistoleros and punk poet Cherry B all spoke openly about being neurodivergent and how all of us navigate to be creative in a neurotypical world out of scraps, noise and relentless imagination. I am a Special Educational Needs rights in education advocate, which has put me in the firing line a few times and its been good to speak to others all from different parts of the country and growing up in different decades to hear about what life has been like for them living with a disability that has been undiagnosed, misunderstood and unsupported.

A lot didn’t make it into the final cut, including some really comical moments from Fiona Duncan that had me chuckling for days afterwards, but which she asked me not to include. Tony and Paige from Voodoo Radio are both are amazing and had me grinning from ear to ear after our interview and editing. The Cherry B and Steve Battershall interviews had so many gems that I hated having to make those edits, but I do try and keep every episode to an hour at the most. They were originally supposed to be between 20-30 minutes, but being a naturally inquisitive person, I can’t stop asking questions, even random ones such as “what was your childhood like?”, “when were you last in fight?” and lots of other randomness.
Its was so good to listen to Zillah Minx talk about Vi Subversa, day glow punk, the Crass and Poison Girls commune and She’s a Punk Rocker Film. If you haven’t seen this cult punk classic, please watch it. The same goes for Cherry B – please read her books as well as listening to her episode for an insight into her story. Cherry B’s chat taught me to keep the record button pressed throughout as there was so much more I could have added.

Lou Moon from Family of Strangers took us back to when she was a young teenage punk in London’s East End who got beaten up by adult Teddy Boys. Similar happened to Loric from Rage DC – a story that didn’t make it to record – when Loric had a knife put to his throat as a 14-year-old punk rocker by a grown man. Ruth from Hagar the Womb solved a ‘what happened to teenage Ruth’ conundrum I had after watching She’s a Punk Rocker, when her dad kicked her out of the house. David Apps’ interview also highlighted some of the violence and discrimination punks faced in the 1970’s and 80’s. As an adult, I can’t even begin to imagine beating up a kid or threating them with a knife because they look different to me or have different views.
It’s been lovely to be tagged in photographs of people meeting up and connecting after being on the podcast. Andy Guttercat and Kathleen Riot tagged me in a photograph of them at a gig together – they are both wonderful creatives! Kathleen is a brilliant writer and photographer, a strong advocate and an activist for many causes. Andy has a great voice and has been in several bands, notably the Guttercats – do watch his video for ‘It’s Just Shit’, you may see some familiar faces..
It can be tricky fitting in the chats between work and school runs, and I had one interview where one of my kids kicked off so much we had to re-schedule. It’s been a learning curve running the podcast; I knew nothing about podcasts when I first started Punk Rock Creatives, but being a DIY Punk, I learned as I went along, and have fully enjoyed it.
