Sharp, savage and seething songs from a trio of highly adept punk musicians!
What do you get when three lads from several top Northeast English punk bands get together? A new, even wilder punk group named after a popular ice cream topping from their youth! Formed in 2024, Monkeys Blood released their first single ‘Fist b/w Vex‘ last September, having already put together a number of tracks for an album. Now their debut 11 track LP ‘Anthropoid‘ has dropped, ready for your aural consumption.
Describing themselves as “Three piece garage punk rock ‘n’ roll noise bastids”, this new band gives the prolific Peesh yet another outlet for his immense and endless creative songwriting.
Monkeys Blood are:
Peesh (LoGoZ/Junkster/Cherry & Peesh) – guitar and vocals
Denni (The Undaclass/The Unnamed/All Out Attack) – bass
Iain (Slalom D) – drums
Opening the album like they mean it, ‘Intro/Transparency‘ serves up a gritty instrumental slice of hot rockin’ guitar and drum action, before segueing straight into the blistering first song. Monkeys Blood see right through the selfish, greedy and entitled ‘powers’ running our world.
The ‘Vultures‘ of the new world are hovering – beware what (and who!) you’re buying into… There are guitar riffs aplenty to keep us jumping throughout this track. Are we all in need of ‘Therapy‘? A more melodic tune, highlighting the double-edged sword of baring your soul to somebody who may interrogate rather than help you to understand…
Better wake up – the ‘Villains‘ are coming… “Anti-social is our way!” Another fast rocker with deep driving bass lines and 100mph drums. The ‘Klownz‘ in charge aren’t funny – there’s a huge feeling of urgency and danger in this great song.
‘Zenith‘ is a big, powerful track, written about, well, big powerful situations! Musically it’s got a hint of 70s rock about it. Our trust has been broken, as society spirals into ‘Decay‘, an angry thrasher:
‘Killjoy‘ is a magnificent song, seeing the band at their hard rockin’ best, filled with ferocious hooks and lyrics. Monkeys Blood are justifiably angry here. I’m getting Killing Joke vibes in ‘Viral‘ – most certainly a good thing! “Stuck in a system where nobody listens” – this one’s an earworm.
A song about disillusionment and that disorientating feeling of being stuck in a bad dream, ‘Landslide‘ calls for clarity and assistance to get through. Final track ‘Mammoth‘ is indeed gargantuan! Slower in pace than the rest of the album, it packs no less of a punch; a searing guitar solo punctates the final few bars before the song fades to a drone.
Monkeys Blood have gone down a rougher path on this release, sonically slashing through the undergrowth, all while energetically shouting their message out loud. A great debut as expected from musicians of this calibre.
