Album review: Heart Attack – ‘The Future Is(n’t) Yours’

This Hawaiian crew pack one hell of a punch on their debut!

Aloha, Heart Attack. Yes, this band hails from Hawaii, and if the message behind ‘The Future Is(n’t) Yours’ is to be believed, life’s not all sun, surfing and eating pineapple beneath palm trees out there. The band originally formed in 2021, and they deal in hard-edged yet anthemic punk rock with the occasional muscular hardcore twist here and there. Rise Against wrestling Good Riddance with Sick Of It All as the referee? Yeah, something like that.

“We! Will go! Go down with the ship!” So go the gang vocals on the intro track, and they certainly sound like a band that means business. ‘Background Music’ rapidly proves itself quite the opposite of its title; close your eyes and you can almost see the outbreak of mass fist-pumping and stage-diving that such a song (and whole record, to be honest) deserves. It’s raw, uncompromising, no-frills stuff, and it’s damn addictive.

They don’t deviate much from their tried-and-tested recipe for the remainder of the record, but that’s no problem – not when the songs are this strong. ‘Your World’ rides in on a serrrated guitar line and rumbling bass before a gloriously crunchy riff surfaces towards the end; the refrains of ‘Bricks’ and ‘Say No More’ are custom-built for a good shout-along, and ‘Behave Yourself’ is a short but invigorating anti-authortariaan rant to rank with the best of them.

Lyrically, they seem to be mostly about persevering through tough times and maintaining a positive attitude. ‘Look Within’ is probably the best example of this, with exhortations to “live your life, embrace today’ set to bouncy riffing and topped off with a short but effective guitar solo. It might sound like an overly simplistic message, but when delivered with this much conviction, even the most cynical of listeners must surely feel something.

Oh, and how could we not mention the 10-second ‘My Straight Edge Tattoos Are Old Enough To Drink’? Clearly, these guys also have a sense of humour to what they do. It can’t be easy to be a touring band when you’re based on a relatively remote set of islands, but here’s hoping ‘The Future Is(n’t) Yours’ becomes widely heard one way or another.
