Jim Jones All Stars deliver the goods with this new and exhilarating collection
A man with an impeccable track record of producing albums that celebrate the golden age of rock’n’roll, drenched with the molten fervour of Detroit’s finest garage bands, the one and only Mr. Jim Jones returns with his latest offering! With each release by Thee Hypnotics, Black Moses, The Jim Jones Revue or Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, he has delved deeper into rock’n’roll’s darkest recesses. Here, with Jim Jones All Stars, his relentless pilgrimage to produce the most downright dirty rock’n’roll tunes out there is close to reaching its pinnacle with a supreme collection of songs in new album ‘Cat Fight’.
The template set down in the band’s debut album ‘Ain’t No Peril’ and celebrated magnificently on last year’s ‘Get Down ~ Get with It’ live album, has the dials turned up to eleven on this sophomore release. Recorded At Bakerland Studios, Leeds and West Eleven Studios, London by Kevin Harris, the album was produced by Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes (who the band supported on their 2024 UK and European tour).
Jim has been joined by former The Jim Jones Revue members Gavin Jay (bass) and Elliot Mortimer (piano and keyboards), along with guitarist Carlton Mounsher, drummer Aidan Sinclair, backing singer Ali Jones and the dual sax barrage of Stuart Dace and Tom Hodges. Topping it off are guest appearances by the aforementioned Chris Robinson on vocals and Chuck Prophet on guitar, with Gloria Jones sprinkling angel dust into the very essence of the album’s infectious grooves.
Opening track ‘Make It Rain’ has a nice Stonesy groove to it before the glorious baritone sax kicks in and Jim enters testifying preacher mode screaming “I’m gonna drench you”. It’s the sort of sound you can imagine Tarantino using if he was to remake ‘Bullitt’.
The effortlessly funky baritone sax sets the pace for the recent single ‘Exiled’ before its little brother squeals into action to augment Jim’s impassioned vocals as he transforms into a full-blown soul brother for its rousing chorus. ‘Born 2 Ride’s fuzzed up guitars mimic revving engines as the song traverses dusty highways. The brass section gets to go full wig out with the central passage with some nice “la la la”s pushing the song towards its conclusion.
The sleazy doo wop swing of ‘I’m On Fire’ sees Jim going into Little Richard territory with another tour de force vocal performance. Last year’s single, the MC5 heavy ‘Goin’ Higher’ is an amphetamine laced stomp of a tune allowing the full band to contribute with a nice little Duane Eddy motif making a welcome appearance. Just as you think it’s all done, the band return with the keys and sax squeaking in delight.
It’s all change for ‘Bekolah’ with its slinky shuffle and seductive brass whilst the nuanced vocals hold you in a heady embrace. If ever Julien Temple’s ‘Absolute Beginners’ was to be remade as a far grittier film, title track ‘Cat Fight’, with its blaring sax and Jim’s yelps, would be a fine addition to the soundtrack.
‘Gashman’ slows the tempo with Jim’s initial vocal reminiscent of Wild Billy Childish. For the first time on the album, the guitars are truly allowed to break free from their reins and let rip. The band come out all guns blazing for the intoxicating ‘Drink Me’ as they blur the edges between seventies TV cop show themes and James Brown’s more explosive gospel sermons. I can’t wait to see it played live in a sweaty club.
‘Chubby’ ups the funk ante, with a nice groove that continues to grow to a massive ending whilst the laid-back vocal has you humming along. The rhythmic beat of ‘Luv U’ takes us back to garage land with a wheezing sax taking centre stage as Jim enters a confessional state before Elliot finishes the track off with some nice work on the keys.
There’s a rumble as Jim shimmers across the dancefloor for closing track ‘Let U Go’. The sultry piano will have you tapping your foot incessantly as the beat leads you ever closer to your own personal epiphany at the church of rock n roll.
The last 45 years of music history might have bypassed the Jim Jones All Stars completely, but when an album sounds as exhilarating as this, who gives a fuck? Magnificent.

My first gig was The Damned at Hull City Hall a few days after my 16th birthday way back in the mid-eighties. 800 gigs and 1,700 bands later, my love of live music remains undiminished – the thrill of discovering a new band is still one of life’s greatest experiences. My musical tastes cover a wide spectrum, but punk and goth still dominate my listening habits.
