10 Years of Fuzz. Zero Fucks Given. The Brazilian duo threw a party to remember!
A decade ago, Yur Mum realised the world needed more riffs with a Brazilian backbeat. Nearly 400 shows later — including Boomtown, Rebellion, and Desertfest, sharing stages with Red Fang, New Model Army, and the UK Subs — they’re still here, still loud, and somehow still standing…
Throwing a great party to celebrate 10 years of the band — a night that was less “gig” and more “controlled chaos” — Yur Mum co-headlined with DIY legends Wonk Unit, and invited their friends and special guests, Healthy Junkies, to open the show at Camden’s Underworld on a sunny Sunday in late September.
Local favourites Healthy Junkies opened with two sizzling sing-along numbers from their excellent and most recent album ‘Listen To The Mad‘: ‘Julie’s Got A Job‘ and ‘Self Conscious‘. Frontwoman Nina Courson welcomed everyone to the celebration, and guitarist Phil Honey-Jones (while simultaneously tuning!) raised another cheer for 10 years of Yur Mum! Crowd favourite ‘This Is Not a Suicide’ saw plenty of dancing down the front, as did the rest of their set. Healthy Junkies aren’t afraid to get political either, with the 2019 song ‘Just A Fool‘ and its refrain “Fight liberalism! Fight capitalism!”, which is more important than ever in these divided times.
Nina had the usual springs in her heels, bouncing around the stage, delivering her vocals with total passion and urgency. David Gault made mincemeat of the drums, while, stage left, Joe Gaskell played his bass with assurance and conviction. All of Healthy Junkies‘ songs are underpinned by solid Rock’n’Roll, which makes them sound great. In conjunction with their topical lyrics, they are one of the best live bands currently in the scene, and certainly got the party well and truly started!
Next up, our birthday band and co-headliners Yur Mum, who proved they’re still ‘Crazy’ with the opener — a song from their 2018 debut album ‘Road Rage’. This was the first of a superb selection of older and newer material from all across their career. They brought us ‘What Do You Want’ from their 2019 EP ‘Ellipsis‘, which was released after the band scaled down to a duo, and the mighty ‘New Beginnings’ from third album ‘Duality’.
Drummer Fabio Couto rested his whirling limbs for a moment to explain: “We’ve been a ‘new band’ for 10 years! Thank you all for being here — it means a lot. There are people here from all over the world — the UK, Europe, and South America.” Bassist and lead vocalist Anelise Kunz added “thanks to the team”, and then, touchingly, Ane and Fabio thanked each other for being in the band 💗
Next up was ‘Doors‘, another old one from Yur Mum‘s first album. This was followed by headbanger ‘Guilt‘, in which Fabio took lead vocals. Ane’s mum in the audience got a shoutout as “Yur Mum’s mum” — and the lovely lady was bravely listening to the show without earplugs! On a more serious note, Ane told us: “Things are shit. Get the people around you to get your councils to sort it out. Be kind to each other.” followed by hard rocker ‘Sweatshop‘ from their ‘Tropical Fuzz‘ album.
A wonderful surprise for us all saw guests Phil and Nina from Healthy Junkies return to the stage for a full-blown rockout of ‘Je Ne Sais Pas‘. Ane and Fabio reiterated: “Thank you for celebrating our journey of 10 years — we have more gigs coming up!” Indeed they have — see their tour dates below. To celebrate the 5th anniversary of their 2021 album ‘Tropical Fuzz‘, Yur Mum have just re-released it on vinyl — get your copy HERE — and, of course, the title track had a well-deserved airing! The mini mosh pit for ‘Say Say‘ gave their set a triumphant ending – it’s wonderful to see this band return to full strength after Ane required back surgery, forcing them to take several months off. There was a particularly lovely moment after Yur Mum‘s set, when Ane went to hug her family, who were all filled with justifiably proud smiles – as were all of us!
Yur Mum had one final surprise in store: they announced that this show was being immortalised as a live album. Look out for more details coming soon!
Alex (jokingly?) introduced ‘We Came Together‘ as a song that was written about making his child, followed by fan favourite ‘Je M’appelle Alex‘. Bassist Mark ‘Pwosion’ Rowland hilariously introduced the next song, ‘I Just Love the Way I Kid Myself‘, in the style of Mötley Crüe! Alex then encouraged Alaisha sing the start of ‘Horses’, before everyone joined in with this ska dance-along, interspersed with Alex ruminating on why he can’t whistle anymore..? Fortunately keyboard player Vez Hawksworth took over whistling duties!
Wonk Unit included a couple of new songs, ‘Big Man In Lincoln‘ being one, followed by Vez reading the ‘Nan’ poem and Alex’s impression of his shouty nan, which of course led into ‘Nan‘, then into ‘Go Easy‘. Alaisha was put on the spot with an unrehearsed ‘Bin Him‘ — and smashed that as well! Vez told us the story of how she started playing with Wonk Unit, crying after being asked to, and being comforted by Pizzatramp, of all people! Another new song, ‘Tanks and Bombs‘, was briefly rehearsed on stage before they started it for real — a delightfully chaotic Punk moment!
‘Part 2 (I Don’t Wanna Be a Builder)‘ brought out a mass sing-along and good energy from the crowd. ‘Luxury Flats‘ went out to the Reformers in the audience — “Of course there aren’t any of those in a Wonk Unit crowd!” cried Alex. The song broke down, but a few rousing words from Alex and the crowd got everything back on track. After a beer break (from the duty-free carrier bag on stage), Wonk Unit went into their final two numbers, ‘Los Angeles‘ and ‘Kings Road Sporting Heroes‘, which both got the crowd jumping.
There were plenty of fist bumps on stage for a job well done throughout the set. Vez, who is leaving the band, was given a special chocolate by the crowd (from Yur Mum’s merch stand!). We also learned that Alaisha is the only person in the band Alex hasn’t made cry yet — several ex-band members in the crowd agreed!
What a smashing celebration – here’s to Yur Mum‘s next 10 years!

Usually found jumping around down the front at gigs, I also relish taking photos and videos, singing, speaking with fellow music fans, and asking musicians the questions nobody else does. Writing about my favourite bands and connecting with people who love music too keeps me more-or-less sane! I’ve worked for over 25 years at a video production company, mainly filming live music events, therefore I have an additional backstage perspective on the scene.
