A Brazilian summer party in London for Yur Mum's new single launch, with the wild Fantazmaz in support!
Ah, the Dev. It’s long been a rockers’ refuge from whatever musical horrors are clogging up the charts, and today it’s a punk rock refuge from the muggiest and hottest day of the year so far, with the air con cranked up to full power. Oh, and they’ve joined forces with two excellent Brazilian-origin punk bands to put on a free gig, so how could we NOT haul arse to Camden Town?
Fantazmaz have a friend covering for their usual drummer, but you wouldn’t know it from how tight they are. They play raucous street punk, veering on thrash metal intensity at times, and it’s impossible to take your eyes off livewire vocalist Thami as she scales the bar, the merch table and even people’s shoulders. Hey, singing from the stage is for past-it heritage acts, didn’t you know? Their closing cover of Turbonegro’s ‘Hobbit Motherfuckers’ is the cherry on top of the cake (is cake punk rock? Answers on a postcard, please.)
Yur Mum are a bass and drums duo, and they’ve hit upon a sound that smashes together fuzzed-up grunge riffs with the speed and urgency of hardcore punk. They use it to utterly devastating effect on the likes of ‘Guilt’, with its almost Alice In Chains-esque atmospherics, annd 100mph new track ‘Same Igual’, which incites utter pandemonium on the dance floor. It’s all so beautifully bleak and raw, and with sets (and songs) of this quality, you get the feeling that Yur Mum might soon outgrow tiny venues like the Dev.
So, have the heat of the moshpit and the fiery performances triumphed over the chill of the air conditioning and the wonderfully cold beer? It’s a close one, but few would disagree that, in combination, they’ve made for a great night out. Follow the bands and the venue if you’re up for more.
