This terrific trio of bands play an immense yet intimate London show
We’re super stoked to have LA rockers Crymwav make the journey back across the Atlantic for another run of shows in the UK, after thoroughly enjoying seeing them play in London last year! Top team UXB Music Promotions and Sounds of the Suburbs Record Store put together a terrific trio of bands, including our headliners, on the night of Friday 20th March 2026 at London’s legendary Hope & Anchor. Opening band Roadkill Drive-Thru are down from Cambridge, and we’re exited to catch a rare London gig from Yorkshire-based Syteria!
Roadkill Drive-Thru released their cracking second album ‘Needs Must While The Devil Rides’ last month, and are eager to showcase it to an appreciative audience.
“We tried to write a love song, and came up with ‘Hell Yeah‘” quips lead vocalist & guitarist Jason Webdale. Nobody’s complaining – in fact we’re all roaring along with its uber-catchy chorus! Drummer Tom Maddox comes in for a bit of stick from his bandmates as he breaks the crash cymbal stand – luckily a spare is rapidly set up and all is well. Bass player Nick Grant is his usual cheerful self, grinning as he whacks out those rockin’ runs which interplay perfectly with both the guitar and drums.
Jason introduces boogie-punk number ‘Blurred‘ with “This song’s a rant”, which its is, and fully justified in its subject of numbing yourself to the harsh realities of a life restricted by government exploitation… Roadkill Drive-Thru won’t ‘Behave‘ around entitled people, as demonstrated with this short banger being belted out! Their set concludes with album favourite and Hillbilly Hoedown ‘Delete The Elite‘, and we can’t believe they’ve charged through 11 songs with as much energy on the last as in the first!
It’s great to see Rebellion Festival favourites Syteria again, especially on a smaller stage, which gives the band an opportunity to interact more while they play. Lead vocalist / guitarist Julia Calvo rarely stops moving, her tremendous voice filling the room with ease. Her brother Pablo Calvo is a hurricane at the drum kit, also lending his voice to the vocal harmonies sung so wonderfully by the whole quartet. A brand new song ‘Scandal‘ receives its live debut tonight – Julia assures us that it will be on Syteria‘s upcoming fourth album, which the band are busy writing right now!
Steph Dawson on bass is having a blast – thowing shapes, attacking her instrument with vigor and adding punchy backing vocals. It’s clear the crowd are enthused by Syteria‘s energy – and in case anyone is flagging, guitarist Jackie ‘Jax’ Chambers has brought along a big bag of wrapped sweets, which she shares amongst her bandmates and also throws out into the audience. The candy theme continues with final number ‘Halloween‘, Fabio Couto from Yur Mum volunteering an excellent blood-curdling scream to start the song!
Crymwav don’t just perform on a stage – they dominate it! Led by the impossibly tall figure of Roger Deering on lead vocals and guitar, tonight’s headliners give it all they’ve got, and we’re blown away! Opening with ‘Loup Garou‘ from their debut 2023 EP, we’re mesmerised by the immense sounds coming from guitarist Lloyd Stuart Casson‘s Flying V and bassist Bruce Braddock‘s Rickenbacker, both men grooving wildly as their long hair thrashes around. We hear plenty of Crymwav‘s newer material too, including the funky ‘101 Damnations‘:
New recruit Pat Muzingo (founding drummer with Junkyard) isn’t letting the pace falter one bit – he’s all over the kit, feeling the heat as he powers through song after song. Singles ‘Contagious‘ and ‘Sense of Adventure‘ are in this thunderous set, and what will be Crymwav‘s next single release ‘Everything Turns Grey‘ – a cover of an Agent Orange song – gets an airing too. “Things are bad in the US right now” declares Roger, before launching into the aptly-titled ‘American Carnage‘.
The set finishes with latest single ‘Speak No Evil‘ as an encore – a song Roger wrote about “Tech being on our necks” – and cheers and much applause deservedly ring out for a show that none of us will forget in a hurry! We’re really looking forward to hearing Crymwav‘s debut full length album which is due for release soon!
