Parisian power-punks hint at vulnerability beneath lashings of adult angst and self-deprecating humour
This September, heavy pop punks mirabelle. are dropping their new four-track EP ‘LOSERS’ via French label BANSHIES, and they’re calling it their “most ambitious release to date”. Why? Because it’s vulnerable. Designed for those struggling with self-confidence and feeling they don’t belong. The band shared: “We wanted to turn frustration, anxiety and failure into loud, honest and unifying songs people can scream together and hopefully leave feeling a little less alone.” ‘LOSERS’ embraces imperfections and addresses general adulthood pressures – which, hey, can hit all of us at any time.
mirabelle. are:
Mathieu Rouland – Guitar & Backing Vocals
Dory-Loup Venta – Vocals, Bass, & Producer
Gianni Messia – Drums & Backing Vocals
Pierre Flew – Guitar & Backing Vocals
The past five years have seen a successful slew of singles, an EP and their self-produced, full-length debut record: ‘Welcome to my Funeral’. The recurring theme: big fun melodies juxtaposed with those aforementioned gnarlier lyric themes.
You might already have heard two of the new tracks (‘Losers’ and ‘Fuck No’) – both released earlier this year. If so, you’ll know what I’m talking about when I say the EP leans heavily into early 00s nu metal and hip-hop experimentation.
‘Losers’ is a great inaugural track for anyone new to mirabelle.. After its opening tongue-in-cheek cheerleader chant, a massive, groove-heavy riff and pounding drums lead us into a verse full of post-millennial emo pop-punk throwbacks. So much so that it’s hard to believe vocalist Dory-Loup Venta isn’t American. Lyrics show the band can laugh at themselves while laying themselves bare: “Didn’t die at 27 / I think I fucked up my life”.
As the track progresses, elements of 90s and 00s nu metal creep in via vinyl scratches, guitar killswitches, vocal adlibs and megaphone effects. The chorus is insanely bright and catchy, with its main hook of “Driving on a loser’s highway / Trying to survive another day”. Never losing that contrasting duality, it’s backed by subtly placed vocal screeches. It’s a song that, quite literally – in places, cheers on fellow losers and, in gathering them all together, forms its own “in” crowd. And if that doesn’t make you feel like part of the clan – then just watch the music video. Excellently done, and nostalgic of a time when MTV was still huge and music videos actually mattered, following a loser through everyday life who eventually finds himself at a 00s-style frat party, ending up fully initiated and feeling part of something (after being pissed on). What’s not to like?
‘Back on Your Feet’ is a glorious style clash with pop-infused main hooks on the flipside of shrieks and hardcore drops that go heavy. It’s as if you’re listening to Jimmy Eat World one minute and the Hell the next – plus Gianni Messia really knows how to hit those sticks! The best bit, though, is the latter half’s heavy breakdown, with added synth injection next to chaotic, jagged guitar squeals.
‘Fuck No’ sees Venta channelling his inner Zack de la Rocha and Fred Durst for some very on-the-nose hip-hop mirroring, before a return serve of melodic pop-punk and some mosh-ready drops – though it’s Mathieu Rouland and Pierre Flew’s guitars that go hardest here. With satirical lyrics taking aim at pretentious people, the black-and-white music video shows the band performing the track against a backdrop of bouncing lowriders (in sync with the hardest breakdown of the EP, of course) and other “aesthetically” relevant shots of bike tyres, fire and alcohol.
Final track ‘Daydreamer’ feels like the EP’s most vulnerable entry. It’s infectious in that lighters-in-the-air, emo banger kind of way, and follows the “I’ll figure it out when I’m dead” approach. A lighter, floaty midsection interrupts flow and evolves into a soft, liquid-synth vibe, which immediately feels like a signal that mirabelle. are finally letting us see beneath all the banter and angst – albeit briefly.
With the title track’s theme setting the tone, the whole EP is able to laugh at itself whilst acknowledging personal journeys and accepting differences. Genre collisions keep each track fresh, and something new can be heard each time. It feels like mirabelle. use this sound to mirror the cluttered complexities of adult life, and (possibly) to express their multiple emotions and identities.
‘LOSERS’ is surprisingly cathartic, whilst being a certified feel-good record with its strength-in-numbers ethos. Plus, who really has it all figured out anyway?
