New Releases Punk News Reviews

EP review: Gorilla Tremors release ‘Gospel According To…’ and preach their rock ‘n’ roll message to the punk congregation.

These garage punk rockers cannot be caged, and prove it with a wild new 6-track EP!

This Belgian band formed in 2024, and are currently based in Antwerp. They have also played in previous bands together over the years (Chief Roberts, Patroness), and have toured around Flanders, as well as The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. The garage-punk band make a lot of noise for a 3-piece, and this is the 2nd EP release, ‘Gospel According To…‘, from Gorilla Tremors. Born out of their love for early 80’s punk and rock’n’roll, the band say, “The songs are about as subtle as King Kong rampaging through New York”. They may well have a point.

‘Gospel According To…‘ was recorded at Raphael Valles Hilario’s Toothemountain Studio, and their recording technique is best described by Gorilla Tremors themselves : “No nonsense, pure and straight ahead. No click tracks, no in-ears, no wireless mics. Just 100% entertainment.” They also say that, ‘Gospel According To…‘ is about the noble mission of preaching raw rock’n’roll in a world where autotune, click tracks and USB sticks rule the roost, which is why every track was recorded to tape.” This trio is made up of :
Guy Crawler – Vocals and bass.
Steve Zilla – Drums.
Tom Kong – Guitar.

The EP’s gorilla themed artwork is quite striking and was designed by King Rat Artwork (also known for The Chiff Chaffs). This release begins with a song called ‘Fight Fight Fight‘, which sounds raw and raucous in its delivery. The singer also has a touch of the Noddy Holder in his vocal style, with perhaps an added Lux Interior element in the primal screams displayed towards the end of this tune.

‘Lollipop‘ slows things down a little, and features a clearer vocal style, which reminded me of Jim Jones Allstars in its delivery. It features handclaps, a piano and a mean guitar riff at the climax of the song.

‘Cobrahead‘ is a highlight of the EP for me, which features a dual male/female vocal attack courtesy of a special guest appearance from Stefanie of the Garagefuzzlers. It features a nice surf-style intro with tremolo guitar, before venturing into some down and dirty rock n roll. “I don’t know you anymore!” the band scream during a lively ending to the song. ‘Let It Slip‘ has a distorted guitar intro that briefly reminds me of The Stooges, before traversing a more traditional rock n’ roll route.

‘Blackout‘ is another highlight, which begins slowly, lulling us into a false sense of security, before speeding proceedings up in a punk rock fashion. The EP ends with a song called ‘Raw Doggin‘, which carries on in that punk rock tradition, and not a song, I imagine, about after-dark activities in UK car parks. It is a reasonably lengthy song compared to the other ones, and this lo-fi effort includes an almost minute-long instrumental intro. ‘Raw Doggin‘ concludes with a wild screaming chorus of “I don’t care what you say,” that will leave your ears ringing, in a joyful fashion.

‘Gospel According To….‘ is an enjoyable garage-punk EP. The band’s self-confessed influences are the likes of Misfits, Ramones, Black Flag, The Sonics and Reverend Beat-Man.

Gorilla Tremors have done a good job of melding many of those influences into their music, but I will leave you with the band’s mission statement, in case you were in any doubt : “The stage is our pulpit. We treat the audience like unbelieving parishioners who need converting to the gospel of Gorilla Tremors”. Amen to that…..
