Yes, hardcore can be FUN too, and Cash Bribe prove it!
As a genre, hardcore generally isn’t known for its sense of humour, so it’s always refreshing to discover a hardcore band that likes to let its hair down from time to time. We’re already on board with Brooklyn hardcore crew Cash Bribe after wrapping our ears around last year’s superb ‘Demonomics’ EP, and now they’re releasing a limited-edition cassette featuring three live tracks and a demo.
The first of those tracks is a gloriously ramshackle, sped-up cover of the Billy Idol classic ‘White Wedding’, which sounds pretty much as you’d expect. Not exactly essential, especially compared to the rest of Cash Bribe’s output, but if it doesn’t at least make you smile, you should probably lighten up a bit. Hey, I’m a grouchy bastard at the best of times, and it certainly worked for me.
The other two live tracks stand as a testament to guitarist Kirk’s claim that Cash Bribe are a “high-energy fuck-you rock n’ roll band” live, with ‘March Of The Creeps’ blasting past at breakneck speed in less than two minutes, and ‘Patron Saint’ progressing from speedy hardcore punk into a seriously crunchy NYHC-style breakdown. Close your eyes, and you can imagine the pit going absolutely wild. Both are abrasive as hell, and have us salivating at the thought of UK dates (please make it happen, folks!).
The final track is a demo version of one of the ‘Demonomics’ tracKs, titled ‘Entropic Depths’, which rides on a brilliantly ominous-sounding bass line and boasts serious groove and bounce. It’s the Cash Bribe we’ve come to know and love, and we’ll be waiting with bated breath to see what they come up with next. In the meantime, this EP is a great stop-gap.
