A punishing debut from Dutch hardcore’s new blood!
We swear, there must be something in the water in the Benelux region, because it’s been a byword for high-quality heavy hardcore for some time now. That looks set to continue, if the likes of Inherited are an indication of what’s to come; five young Dutch guys (three of them still in their teens) from the isolated Zeeland peninsula, with the kind of musical chops and powerhouse vocals that many older bands would kill for.
An intro track with a mid-paced chugging riff gets our adrenaline flowing, before ‘Wasted Space’ bursts into life with some seriously muscular guitar work and the kind of machine-gun bass drum action that recalls metallic hardcore stalwarts like Biohazard and Hatebreed (and trust us, this track hits just as hard as those of the aforementioned bands). It ends with a savage breakdown, before the ode to overcoming adversity that is ‘Won’t Break’ kicks in with the musical equivalent of a good kicking. That refrain of “I won’t break, no matter how much I must take” lingers long in the memory, and there’s another brutal breakdown before an eerie little trip-hop outro.
The title track boasts all the subtlety and nuance of a fully-loaded runaway freight train, with some great gang vocals, and it’s tempting to close your eyes and imagine a great melee of flailing limbs, instruments, riffs and cables as that beast of a riff surfaces about two-thirds of the way through. They then sign off with the tip of the hat to their hardcore forefathers that is ‘Inherited’, which boasts the kind of mini-chorus that should easily get any self-respecting crowd roaring along with frontman Jamie’s throat-shredding growl. They throw in one final breakdown for good measure, and depart victorious.
They’re probably sick of journos like us mentioning their youthfulness, but ‘All 4 One’ really does mark out Inherited as a young band to be taken seriously. We’ll be keeping a close eye on them, and we recommend you do too. Folks, the hardcore kids are alright.
