The Essex Punk duo's angriest, loudest and best collection yet!
Fancy getting angry for 35 minutes? The Meffs have you covered. Their sophomore album ‘Business‘ is ready to blast your ears from tomorrow, 11th September 2026, via Frontiers Label Group. Featuring 11 tracks of gloriously scrappy, politically-charged punk that takes swings at the music industry, corrupt systems, performative authenticity and pretty much anything else deserving of a kicking.
Despite a whirlwind 2025, which included supports with The Sex Pistols, The Undertones, and The Subways, and selling out headline shows across the UK and Europe, Glastonbury, 2000trees, Rebellion and Download Festivals, dynamic Essex duo Lily (guitar and vocals) and Lewis (drums) somehow found time to pen their most politically charged, hard-hitting music to date. There’s no shortage of inspiration in a world still dominated by big business, where inequality is rife and cash is still condsidered king…
Working with producer Dan Weller (SikTh guitarist), ‘Business‘ encompasses all that The Meffs stand for: staying true to their values and making political music that the world deserves right now – while unashamedly hitting hard with the powerhouse drums and fuzzy guitar sounds that drew so many into their circle. Vocalist Lily states the album is “a display of anger and vulnerability. One leads to the other and that’s the place I was in when writing this album. I think so many people will relate. This is the most authentic music we’ve released to date.”
Album opener ‘Dreamin’‘ starts with a thunderous drum solo by Lewis, before Lily’s lighning guitar and vocals strike in. A blast of rage against the manipulative algorithms that have been trained to stop us thinking for ourselves.. By contrast, headbanger ‘What A Nightmare‘ rolls across us like the fog from a horror movie. It’s spine-chillingly scary to hear Lily list some of the truly awful things that are happening while many look the other way. Distorted guitars and almost sombre drumming underscore the points – “The world needs starting again, What a fucking nightmare”.
‘Where Did It All Go Wrong?‘ is a question many of us ask in a system that seems to be deliberately designed to grind us down. The Meffs try to unravel it in this Punk banger with its rapid-fire, scream-along chorus!
Of the title track ‘Business‘, Lily says, “The world and this industry tell you to be your ‘authentic self’… But only if your ‘authentic self’ fits a mould. Only if your ‘authentic self’ is on brand. We’re not hard enough but we’re not soft enough, we’re not queer enough but we’re too queer, we’re too rough but not rough enough. But one thing’s certain; we know who The Meffs are and what The Meffs stand for. ‘Business‘ is a soundtrack for the ignored, the excluded and the overworked, whilst being a personal love song to an industry with closed doors just waiting to be pushed open.” It also shows the band at their acerbic best, both lyrically and musically:
The next hard-hitting track is ‘Law‘. Lily explains she “wrote this off the back of Tommy Robinson doing a runner to another country the first time, Andrew Tate being on house arrest, and how if you’ve got status or money you can get off the hook – The corruption in the law systems here and worldwide.” The guitar into is superb, followed by complex percussion patterns from Lewis in a more melodic track, and their message rings out clear and true. This one’s for those of us who became anarchists excatly bceacuse of a system that’s supposed to protect us being so corrupt.
Shortest track on the album ‘Fight‘ crams minutes of energy into one thirty second burst. At a live gig, it’s the sign for the pit to go wall-of-death!
My favourite song on ‘Business‘, ‘Disorder (Wake Up)‘ provides a commentary for the world as we know it, and a loud message to the ‘anti-woke’ brigade – would you rather stay asleep, ignorant and completely led by others, while all around you falls? It’s the heaviest album track, with an unforgettable chorus “Wake up! Wake up! Who’s your enemy? It’s not you it’s not me!” (I may have been known to howl along at recent gigs.. 😉):
‘Love To Lose‘ is the ideal hype song, one for the crowd to go wild as one at The Meffs‘ explosive live shows. “It makes you feel alive” sings Lily, and it certainly does get the blood pumping!
Captured with all the energy and scuzzy guitars of the live show, fan favourite ‘So Modern (Keep Up)‘ reflects the ridiculously frantic pace of life in the digital and social media age. Lily’s gutteral scream after each verse blows the lid off the internal frustration and pressure resulting from tryimg to “Keep up”.
Also their latest single, ‘God Complex‘ features Ingo, lead singer of the German Punk band Donots. The ultimate number about hypocrisy, it’s always the biggest liars who deceive themselves; “Who are you when nobody’s watching?” Another banger!
I’ve always loved ‘Like Gravity‘ since I first heard it played live. This introspective song takes the listener on a journey of self-deprecation – the direct opposite of the previous track- where those who are honest with themselves often suffer from the most self-doubt. The heaviness experienced by the psyche is felt like a physical force, with the crushing guitar and drums punctuating the experience.
There’s a bonus digital download of The Meffs standout cover of The Prodigy‘s ‘Breathe‘, a song they have totally made their own at gigs, Lily grinning maniacally as she stalks the stage, Lewis pounding the skins like a thing posessed. Usually found jumping around down the front at gigs, I also relish taking photos and videos, singing, speaking with fellow music fans, and asking musicians the questions nobody else does. Writing about my favourite bands and connecting with people who love music too keeps me more-or-less sane! I’ve worked for over 25 years at a video production company, mainly filming live music events, therefore I have an additional backstage perspective on the scene.
