Straight-edge hardcore lives - and then some!
Some things never change, indeed, but that’s not always a bad thing. Straight-edge hardcore is a case in point; the genre is a well-trodden path by now, but it still sounds great if done well, and what this debut from New Jersey/Pennsylvania crew Hindsight lacks in surprises, it more than makes up in terms of passion and energy.
Barrelling through 10 songs in only 15 minutes, there’s plenty here for fans of the likes of American Nightmare and Count Me Out to salivate over. We especially like the way they switch from warp-speed hardcore punk to muscular riffing (and often back again) on ‘Holding Until My Fingers Break’ and ‘The Apple Falls Far’. There’s also a bleak but often relatable lyrical outlook on the likes of ‘Can’t See The End’ and ‘Dying To Say’ – Hindsight sound like they needed to make this record, and that’s a big part of what makes it so compelling.
Apparently, the band’s original goal was to “write some fast hardcore songs that you could mosh and sing along to and open an upcoming Trail of Lies gig”. We’re not sure if they accomplished the latter, but on ‘Some Things Never Change’, they’ve managed the former in fine style. Keep raging, guys – straight-edge hardcore is safe in your hands.
