The quartet display some classic punk songwriting skills on their third album!
Athens, Greece punk rock quartet The Overjoyed have just released their third studio album, named ‘Overjoyed’ after the band.
They were founded seventeen years ago by Leonidas Theofylaktidis —guitar, vocals, songwriting, production; Thanasis Manolopoulos — bass and Vangelis Dimos —drums. Stefanos Moisidis joined the band in 2018 as second guitarist and vocalist.
The band has toured in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal, Austria, Istanbul in Turkey and Japan.
They name as their inspirations Buzzcocks, Green Day, Ramones, Sex Pistols, GBH. Some of their songs remind me of the Alarm.
The Overjoyed write about their new LP: “As always (cause we never really had a producer) we produced this whole album ourselves with the help of our friend and most amazing upcoming engineer/mixer in Athens, Marios Adamopoulos.”
Leonidas, the band’s primary lyricist, has always written in English.
The songs are about subjects like personal struggles, mental health, addiction and identity. Of the opening track ‘Can’t Write Music‘, Leonidas writes: “I was in a really dark place… struggling with self-identity, drugs, a break-up… while living in a world recovering from a worldwide epidemic and a social-political mass hysteria.”
Leonidas writes about the song ‘Spark‘: “It’s a reminder that we still got it and that we still don’t give a shit about most of the people that are trying to put you down.”
Their track ‘Joy Vampire’, is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the “death of rock ’n’ roll” and the band’s determination to resurrect it.
