A Fez-tastic celebration of new music!
East London’s bright and busy brewery & live music venue played host to the eagerly anticipated official launch night of ‘Two Bucks and a Bottle of Ketchup‘ from The Ovines on a humid Thursday. With merch giveaways and a party atmosphere, fans both old and new flocked to celebrate this excellent EP release with the band!
Inviting their guests Angered Kenneth followed by Nick Diver to open the show, The Ovines pulled out all the stops to make this a summer evening to remember! Each attendee was delighted to receive a neat vinylpostcard, featuring The Ovines’ lead single from the EP, ‘Mind Of Mine‘:

A female fronted punk rock band from Medway, Kent, UK, Angered Kenneth were playing their first ever London show. A young band formed just last year, assertive singer (Emily?) belted out several great songs, including a punked-up cover of The Cardigans‘ ‘My Favourite Game‘. I was very impressed with the on-point and powerful drumming from her colleague behind her throughout their set.
Angered Kenneth’s own material included the justified feminist rage of ‘I’m Not Your Girl‘ and ‘A Woman Alone‘ – “I’m smiling so why am I being stared at?” – plus slower number ‘Crown‘, and the indie-pop ‘Summer Song‘ about growing up, and wishing to give your younger self much-needed advice and love. They also played ‘Bossy‘, their fab upcoming first single, dropping on 22nd August. Pre-save it HERE!

Showcasing a gamut of musical genres within each of their songs, Nick Diver on vocals and guitar was accompanied by a bassist with five snazzy orange strings to match his Orange amp, and a drummer who was definitely channelling his inner Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) with flourishes and much headbanging..
I’m not convinced that a hard rock drummer, a blues bassist and an indie-pop singer / guitarist quite gelled musically, but their set was certainly different!

The Ovines marked their grand entrance by showering the large and lively audience of all ages with a hail of red Fez hats. These were promptly donned by all who had snagged one! Their twelve-song set kicked off in sixth gear with ‘Ten Street Mile‘ from the new EP as the crowd went wild on the dance floor. Current single release ‘Mind Of Mine‘ was greeted with huge cheers!
In celebratory mood, singer / guitarist Matt announced that he’d be opening a bottle of champagne on stage to share with his bandmates.. unfortunately it isn’t a good idea to do so near your pedal board.. as Matt discovered! The ensuing technical problems were eventually resolved, during the raw and emotional ‘Loose Change‘, which still sounded great to my ears!

Continuing with the techno-punk of ‘Waiting Room‘ – “I wanna see everyone dancing” cried Matt – they carried on into the riotous ‘Walkie Talkie Man‘ as the assembled throng persisted to enjoy the party atmosphere. A rompin’ stompin’ cover of ‘Psycho Killer‘ was one of the best I’ve heard! I captured my favourite track from the EP ‘Loser Mate‘ on video:
Will Jackson on guitar rocked and rolled through the toe-tapping ‘Fish Tank‘, before the whole band erupted into the glorious noise of the EP’s title track ‘Two Bucks’. Concluding the show with a mass outbreak of skanking in the audience to the Fez-tastic ‘Fire In A Meth Lab‘, the band exited, triumphant, knowing they had given us 100% on this magnificent night!

Usually found jumping around down the front at gigs, I also relish taking photos and videos, singing, speaking with fellow music fans, and asking musicians the questions nobody else does. Writing about my favourite bands and connecting with people who love music too keeps me more-or-less sane! I’ve worked for over 25 years at a video production company, mainly filming live music events, therefore I have an additional backstage perspective on the scene.
