This is everything you love about Clobber, taken to the extreme!
Brace yourselves, friends – this one is brutally short, brutally fast, and, well, just plain brutal. Not that we’d expect (or, indeed, want) things otherwise from Clobber; we’ve crossed paths with the London street-core quartet several times over the past few years, and they can always be relied on to whip any self-respecting pit into a maelstrom whilst speaking truth to power.
In the words of frontman Charlie Longman, this EP is “the heaviest, nastiest thing that Clobber have ever written. We are a band that will always reflect the world around us, and it has never been nastier or heavier to live through.” The man does not lie – has he ever?
They go straight for the jugular with the two-minute ‘Do Less’; the mix of ‘77 style punk with raging hardcore (and great gang vocals!) is familiar enough, but this time around there’s even more of a sense of urgency. It’s as if they’ve finally been able to speak their minds after holding too much inside for too long, and indeed, the following ‘Be Someone’ is an anthemic ode to overcoming mental health struggles (a subject close to the band’s heart) to be the best version of yourself. It suddenly speeds up halfway through, and mark our words, it’s going to be a live favourite.
They sign off with the beast that is the title track; taking aim at foreign policy and war crimes with the line “My god is bigger, my god has won, my god gave me bullets and guns” amid a barrage of vitriolic guitar noise. It grinds to an almighty close with probably the band’s most fearsome breakdown to date, and is proof enough that they can be just as effective when they ease up on the accelerator.
How much more Clobber could Clobber be? On this EP, the answer is indisputably: none more Clobber. This is a band truly on top of their game; they’ve got the songs, they’ve got plenty worthwhile to say, and it’s high time more people started paying attention. They’ll be playing shows again soon, and apparently there’s an album on the way too; ‘God Loves, Man Kills’ has us hungry for both.
