A gripping collection of captivating Punk tunes from this duo turned trio
Punky oddballs from East Sussex,UK, Gripper Lee are known for their darkly witty lyrics, earworm hooks, blistering guitar, and expressive drumming. Never a band to stand still, they’ve just released their latest EP ‘Look Away Now‘ comprising 5 enticing tracks, with new recruit Jusin Saban adding his guitar wizardry to the mix.
Gripper Lee are:
Richie Nice – lead vocals and bass guitar
Martyn ‘Gripper’ Lee -drums and backing vocals
Justin Saban – guitar
Title track ‘Look Away Now‘ starts with the TV announcement on sports news “If you don’t want to know the score, look away now”. It’s not about the footie results of course! It’s actually a classic catchy Punk number about opening your eyes to what’s going on in this world, instead of burying your head in the sand.. or trying to..
‘Pale Blue Dot‘ is a rockier, heavier number, about the way people are intimidated into submission to stop looking after this planet – our only home. The vocals stray more than a little into Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) territory, which works perfectly for this song!
The next three songs; ‘Shape Of Things To Come‘, ‘Paper-Thin Skin‘ and ‘So What Do We Know?‘ all appeared on Gripper Lee‘s 2024 album ‘So What Do We Know?‘. These versions have been reworked with new guitarist Justin which has spiced them up and added new dimemsions to what were already great tracks! Richie’s blistering, melodic bass and compelling vocals, plus Gripper’s on-point, powerful drumming and harmonious backing vocals, still shine through in each number.
The power of three has most certainly added a lot to the band; we love ‘Look Away Now‘, their first release as a trio. If you’re into insanely catchy, socially conscious Punk songs with one of the tightest rhythm sections you’ve ever heard, give this great EP a listen!
