Dutch crossover stalwarts go straight for the jugular on their new EP!
Ancestral Sin hail from the Netherlands, and are true crossover veterans, having been blending hardcore and metal influences since 1989. This EP is the follow up to 2022’s full-length ‘Social Hate Speech’, and according to the band themselves, people who haven’t heard them before “should expect a speedy kick in the face until the very last second”. We’ve been warned.
‘Speedy’ is definitely the operative word here. With four songs in only six minutes, this may well be the shortest record I’ve ever reviewed. The opening title track and closing ‘Whistle Blower’ go flying past at 100mph, with limited respite in the form of some crunchy mid-section thrash riffing, and replete with vocalist Jake’s passionate, high-pitched yelling. Close your eyes, and you can almost see a swirling, stagediving, mic-grabbing maelstrom of a pit.
In between, the EP gets a bit (well, a couple of minutes) to breathe a bit. ‘Vulgar Display Of Wealth’ slows things down to a kind of brisk sprint, with another beast of a riff, whilst ‘Hardcore Woke Cop’ is utterly relentless, bursting with attitude and the kind of intense double bass-drum action that would have Slayer legend Dave Lombardo nodding in approval.
Metallic hardcore is hardly in short supply these days, but these guys do it better than most, and ‘Next Of Sin’ is proof enough that they’re still hungry after all these years. Keep up the good work, gentlemen.
