The Vulpynes frontwoman bares her deeper emotions in this exquisite showcase
Guitarist and vocalist of the dynamic punk rock duo Vulpynes, Molly Vulpyne has now unveiled her inaugural solo endeavour. In her own words, Molly describes ‘Amortise‘ as “An experiment I miraculously achieved without overthinking, one that feels truly authentic.”
The four songs featured on the EP were penned over the past few years and reflect a different side of Molly that didn’t quite align with her previous musical projects. Tired of being pigeonholed as the ‘angry shouty girl’ Molly sought a change of pace. She used this solo record as an opportunity to express a different side. Featuring poignant and unfiltered lyrics referencing love and the darkness of the mind, Molly’s new project embraces a newfound vulnerability. Intertwined with haunting harmonies and Molly’s signature riffs, this solo work maintains a distinctive edge.
Colaborating with Meryl Streek, who takes charge of the drums and beats, bass duties are expertly handled by Tony Carberry, known for his work with the Lee Harveys, while the track ‘Dead in the Water‘ features the talents of Peter Jones from Paranoid Visions.
“The whole EP is lyrically more vulnerable and honest than anything I’ve ever written”, explains Molly. “A lot of the phrasing is quite succinct and to the point – nothing dressed up in metaphors or bows. It’s simply whatever way I was thinking or feeling at the time.”
The EP’s opening song ‘Dead In The Water’ is a fiery, stomping track that quickly gets to the core of where Molly is headed to in her new phase. “It’s a tongue in cheek track about feeling repulsed by your inability to stand up for yourself,” she states. “It’s watching yourself act like an idiot in the 3rd person but finding it impossible to stop!” Molly’s expressive voice gives this track a richness which contrasts with the starkness of the tune. I get the feeling it was pretty cathartic for her to write!
Second track ‘Romantic‘ takes an interesting twist upon the concept – it’s an anti-romance song! Molly’s lyrics “I’m not romantic, I romanticise being on my own” alongside a fuzzy pop punk tune echo a longing for the true solitude that’s often lost when living with a partner.
‘Nothing Fills‘ is a faster number, a song about lack of fulfilment and the over-thinking that can accompany that feeling. Really great guitar work from Molly on this song, it’s my favourite musically!
Final track ‘Inertia Right Hand Man‘ slows right down again, with an almost acoustic, haunting sound. Molly’s voice is amazing as she sings the melody, a song of bravery in the face of doubt and adversity.
This solo project marks a shift towards melody over raw power, resulting in an infectious and captivating sound. ‘Amortise’ is out on FOAD Musick / ADVANCEUK now – order your copy of the EP HERE
