Teresa Taylor, the drummer for the psych-punk band the Butthole Surfers passed away after a lengthy battle with lung disease.
The Butthole Surfers’ former drummer, Teresa Taylor (known as Teresa Nervosa), passed away on June 19 due to end-stage lung disease at the age of 60. She had been part of Texas’ hardcore punk scene since 1983 and had been with the Butthole Surfers from 1983 to 1985, 1986 to 1989, and 2008 to 2009. Last year, Taylor was reportedly placed in hospice.
Taylor was born in Arlington, Texas, in 1962. In high school, she took up the drums after playing in various marching bands in Austin and Fort Worth alongside fellow Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey. Taylor joined the band in 1983 after letting the band members practice in a warehouse space she was renting at the time. Unfortunately, Taylor had to leave the group in 1989 due to light-induced seizures.
Cheryl Curtice, Taylor’s partner, posted on Facebook that the beloved Teresa passed away peacefully in her sleep “clean and sober,”. Curtice wrote that Taylor was so courageous in the face of her illness, and that everyone was fortunate to have her strong spirit in their lives. “She will be forever missed,” Curtice added, saying that a memorial service will be planned for the future. “I love you, beloved Teresa,” she wrote.
