These London-based punk rockers have a lot to say about political oppression and deception..
The third of a trio of releases The Scuts have written about the scourge that is modern day capitalism, ‘No Profit‘ dropped on 1st December 2025, their first new music in 5 years. Previous records ‘Gross Profit‘ and ‘Net Profit‘ are not about doing the accounts, hell no; in fact they take a close look at the real, painful, lived experience of the living wage, generation rent, the Tories (of course) and more..
This their latest 4 track EP, ‘No Profit‘, was recorded and mixed by Greg Hummell at Hackney Road Studios, and mastered by Dave Crawford at Plastic Tree Studios.
The Scuts are:
Ali – rhythm guitar, vocals
Steve – drums, backing vocals
Chad – bass, backing vocals
Rob – lead guitar, backing vocals
The Scuts formed in October 2013 and started gigging around London in early 2014. Their influences include NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Lagwagon and NUFAN. Bristling with anger at the mistreatment of the poor and everyday folk by ghastly politicians, their songs go straight for the jugulars of the ignorant and manipulative rich.
‘30p Lee‘ is a nickname for British politician Lee Anderson (former Conservative, now with Reform UK), given after he claimed in 2022 that people using food banks lack cooking skills and that nutritious, scratch-cooked meals could be made for 30p a day. His ridiculous views on poverty and social justice come in for total punk derision:
Tory hypocrisy and financial mismanagement are the subject of ‘Lettuce Eat Cake‘, inspired by a 2022 livestream by newspaper the Daily Star of an iceberg lettuce next to a framed photograph of Liz Truss, who had just been appointed UK prime minister. This was prompted by an opinion piece in The Economist that compared the expected brevity of Truss’s premiership to the shelf life of a head of lettuce.. Truss announced her resignation as PM on 20th October 2022 having served just 49 days in office, the shortest tenure in British history, and indeed before the lettuce had wilted!
The evil ‘Miss Information‘ incites racist violence by spreading lies and hatred amongst the gullible, leading them to attack the police and smash up cities in the name of ‘patriotism’. Failing to realise that they are being used as pawns, and are in fact fighting for their own destruction, this punk banger is a stark reminder to them of how governments can control the populace:
In ‘I Can’t Afford This‘ The Scuts recite a litany of essential requirements for daily living that are rapidly becoming unaffordable – it’s ‘Heat or Eat’ in crumbling, mould-riddden buildings. This is reality for far too many, trapped into poverty by an uncaring system. The song breaks down from punk to dub, with a slick bassline and inspirational lead guitar sonically illustrating a landscape of preventable despair.
