A rare Sex Pistols video ‘master tape’ telling the story of the punk band is expected to sell in excess of £10,000 at auction.
A copy of ‘The Filth and the Fury, A Sex Pistol Film’, believed to be a studio master tape, is due to go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, in South Derbyshire. Such is the importance of the digital Betacam tape by Resolution Studio it has an opening price of £3,000 but is expected to hit over £10,000 before the gavel falls. Now that’s some serious ‘filthy lucre.’
Claire Howell, music memorabilia consultant at Hanson’s, told local paper Staffordshire Live, “This is an exceptionally rare piece of musical history celebrating an iconic group who smashed their way to fame in the mid-70s and broke the mould when it came to music, fashion, style and attitude.
The tape comes from the collection of a private collector who originally purchased the tape at an auction in 2019 in a music ‘miscellaneous’ lot. Most of the lot was, in comparison, worthless, but this gem of a tape was discovered at the bottom of the box.
The auction notes state:
An extremely rare Sex Pistols ‘The Filth & The Fury’ Promo / Demo Digital Betacam tape from Resolution Studio.
Assembled from unseen archive footage, rare offcuts and masses of hilarious junk-culture detail from the pre-punk ’70s, this inspired collage is as much passionate social history as rockumentary. Intercutting a touching, never-before-seen Sid Vicious interview with contemporary quotes from the surviving Pistols – wittily filmed, like renegade villains, in silhouette – Julien Temple exposes the band’s human side as never before. This unique Digital Betacam tape features the 3 videos for ‘God Save The Queen’, ‘Pretty Vacant’ and ‘Holidays In The Sun’ interspersed with interviews with the band and management.
The 12-13 min tape is also supplied with a USB containing the film from the tape
Got a spare £10,000? The Sex Pistols tape, lot 4251, is due to be sold TODAY, March 23, at 10:30 GMT Hansons Auctioneers, Etwall UK
