It's what you get when you cross a piranha with a piranha!
Following up from 2025’s full length album (and first one in over 20 years!), ‘The World Is Still Here and So Are We’, Mclusky give us 6 tracks (some new and some not) that are spiky and sometimes uncomfortable but remind us how much energy this 3 piece have.
‘i sure am getting sick of this bowling alley’ opens with thunderous bass and drums and Andrew Falkous’s almost matter of fact vocals on ‘i know computer’ before his guitar work lands an edgy current of disharmony. Which brings you nicely to, ‘ as a Dad’. Warped almost steel-string sounding guitar intro swings into drum (Jack Egglestone) breaks that are double downed on by Damien Sayell’s bass playing. “In the Piranha was another Piranha” is such an evocative lyric that it’s been spinning around in my head for weeks now. The “hate your guts’” lyric is almost there to knock you down but it’s the closing, “the long crawl to irrelevance” repeated that underlines the powerful messaging in ‘as a Dad’.
‘Hi! We are on strike’ Again bass and drums intro a wonderfully simple idea for a song that is under two minutes in length. “it’s simple mathematics, simple – hi! We are on strike” is a brilliant dessert to the opening lyrics, “my boss says I am late. Am I late? Am I late when I dispute the concept of a boss?”
Is it EP or is it LP? It probably matters to some yet I would class this as an excellent introduction to Mclusky. Like me, maybe bring no preconceptions with you through the door.
Produced by Anthony Chapman with mastering by Bob Weston (both of whom worked on, ‘The World is Still Here and So Are We’) I kinda get the feeling that there will be much more to come from Mclusky in the near future.
