Hardcore meets rock n' roll on this Spain-based trio's debut EP!
Gather round, my friends, because it’s Story Time With Alex Goose. It was almost exactly twenty years ago that I saw a band called Gallows for the first time at a pub in Kingston. I had fallen in love with their debut album, ‘Orchestra Of Wolves’, and the band did it fine justice that night, with a fierce, confrontational set. Great stuff, I thought, but too raw and visceral to make it beyond cult status. I’ve never been so happy to eat my words as I was three years later, when the band played a packed London Forum with Every Time I Die in support.
Why am I mentioning this? Because Spain-based trio Corporate Job’s debut EP recalls both of the aforementioned bands, and will hopefully get folks’ pulses racing in the same way that ‘Orchestra Of Wolves’ did for mine all those years ago. They go hell for leather on opener ‘Bittersweet’; a riff-tastic blend of hardcore fury with the odd metallic twist, and plenty of rock n’ roll swagger.
‘Public Erasure’ continues in a similar vein, and is even more relentless, with some gloriously bouncy riffing in the mid-section. ‘Desperate Milestones’ does indeed reek of desperation – but in a good way, in the sense that the band clearly NEED this music as an outlet, and they blast through its two minutes in typically raucous style.
It’s the final track – ‘Gawking At Infinity’ – however, where the band’s inventive streak really shines through. Initially built around a stop-start riff and propulsive drumming, it gives way to an epic breakdown of sorts, with what sounds like flashes of horns in the background?! This is unorthodox stuff, and we can’t wait to see what Corporate Job will come up with next. In the meantime, keep an eye on them via the links below.
