Punk community in shock after the sad news breaks
This article has been edited after the unexpected death of Ed – R.I.P.
Waves of shock and grief have rippled through the punk community, following the announcement on Louder Than War this afternoon that Eddie Garrity / Ed / Edweena Banger had unexpectedly passed away. Eddie Garrity’s Slaughter were due to take to the stage tonight in York, after announcing the release of their debut EP ‘Hot Raw Metal & Gasoline’ just days ago.
Eddie Garrity aka Ed Banger (Ed Banger & the Nosebleeds, Slaughter & the Dogs / Slaughter) was born and raised in Wythenshawe, Manchester. Ed worked as a roadie for fellow mancunians Slaughter & the Dogs, when supporting the Sex Pistols & Buzzcocks at the legendary Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall show on 20th July 1976.
Following this Ed formed The Nosebleeds and became a fixture in the 1977 punk wars, the Nosebleeds single ‘Ain’t Been To No Music School / Fascist pigs’ was a schoolboy anthem around Manchester in 1977, selling 10,000 copies.

Ed Banger left the Nosebleeds in 1979, and joined Slaughter & the Dogs, after original singer Wayne Barrett had left the band on the eve of a 1979 UK tour. The album ‘Bite Back’ was released in 1980 (Ed co-writing many of the songs) under the abbreviated name ‘Slaughter’, the band then embarked on a sold out, nationwide tour of the UK. The original ‘Bite Back’ era came to an end in 1981.
Going on to perform under a new personality, Edweena Banger, Ed continued to delight punk fans with live shows and new material. This most recent project was aimed to bring the classic tracks from ‘Bite Back‘ to a new audience.

I am leaving the EP review written several days ago in place, out of respect for Ed’s songwriting talent.
The good times certainly do rock ‘n’ roll in this 4 track EP! Starting with title song ‘Hot Raw Metal and Gasoline‘, all fuzzy riffs and revved up drums, the band are firing on all four cylinders!
A punky ode to T. Rex glam rocker Marc Bolan, ‘Dandy Rocker‘ name-checks their many hits. With a killer guitar solo and a few snippets of Bolan’s music too, this is a cool track, baby.
Third song ‘The Fool‘ is piano based. Eddie’s emotive voice pleads with the ‘legend in the badlands’ not to waste his energy on petty criminal activities in the name of rebellion – as we know, this harms rather than helps the cause..
Final number ‘Yeah Yeah‘ is a 21st century take on 50s and 60s rock ‘n’ roll – the original essence is there, but the pace is faster. Smashing guitar work across the whole track makes for a stunning conclusion to the EP.
All the tracks were written by Eddie Garrity, and the EP was recorded at Crack Studios, Manchester last year. The CD of ‘Hot Raw Metal & Gasoline’ is avaialble from Ed’s WEBSITE (scroll down!)
Our sincere condolences go out to Ed’s family, bandmates, friends, and many fans. Rest In Peace Ed.

Usually found jumping around down the front at gigs, I also relish taking photos and videos, singing, speaking with fellow music fans, and asking musicians the questions nobody else does. Writing about my favourite bands and connecting with people who love music too keeps me more-or-less sane! I’ve worked for over 25 years at a video production company, mainly filming live music events, therefore I have an additional backstage perspective on the scene.
