27-odd years since they originally formed, these Floridian survivors finally release their debut album!
On reading their biography, it’s hard not to be amazed that The Mary Tyler Whores exist in the 21st century, never mind that they’ve managed to record a whole album. Back in the day (we’re talking around 1999), the Floridians caused and courted chaos in equally large measures whilst on tour; one story involves a fan hurling his prosthetic leg onstage, which vocalist Frankie ‘Crime’ Cassara promptly used as a weapon on guitarist (and general partner-in-crime) Doobie Tyler Whore. Longevity? Pur-lease – these guys lived fast and somehow managed not to die young.
Anyway, fast forward to 2023, and the two aforementioned reprobates have not only resurrected the band as a quintet, but somehow also put together this long-awaited debut album. ‘As Filthy As We Wanna Be’ certainly would have been the ideal soundtrack to some kind of fly-on-the-wall documentary of those early years of the band; this is full-blooded punk rock with plenty of rock n’ roll swagger and the constant, thrilling sensation that the wheels could fall off at any point.
The opening brace of ‘American Sex Fiend’ and ‘Hell On Wheels’ (the latter with a seal of approval from none other than Iggy Pop!) burst forth from the speakers with squalling guitars, Jello Biafra-esque vocals and the kind of choruses that will lodge themselves in your brain whether you like it or not. It’s a template from which they don’t deviate much over the course of ‘As Filthy As…’, but trust us, you won’t mind – not when the quality control and energy levels are this high.
‘Dance With Me’ will indeed want to make you seriously shake arse, as will ‘White Trash Girl’. Fishbone frontman Angelo Moore pops up to lend his saxophone skills on the excellent ‘Clamjacked’, and the band even whip out the acoustic guitars for three-odd minutes for the dark-hearted ‘Phantom Love’. Souped-up covers of Joy Division’s ‘Isolation’ and Devo’s ‘Whip It’ aren’t strictly necessary, but will most likely make you smile at the band’s irreverence. The closing ‘World Against Me’ features hip-hop duo Riff Raff and Mike G; as rock-rap collaborations go, it’s not quite ‘Bring The Noise’, but it certainly works well.
Oh, and did we mention that the whole record is overseen by producer Greg Hetson, of Circle Jerks and Bad Religion fame? Clearly the man has impeccable taste. Goodness knows how much longer The Mary Tyler Whores will hold it together, but they can be proud to have birthed ‘As Filthy As…’ in all its high-octane glory. Folks, listen to music like this, and we promise you that you will NEVER truly grow old.
