Eight tracks of prime skate-thrash from Atlanta!
Self-described as a “drinking band with a punk problem”, Atlanta quartet Forsaken Profits have been together for over fourteen years, and on the evidence of ‘Road Rash’, the demon booze hasn’t blunted them at all. This is eight tracks (and roughly twenty minutes) of seriously gnarly skate-thrash that should have fans of bands like Suicidal Tendencies and DRI damn near wetting themselves with glee.
As with many of the best crossover bands, it’s the frontman – one Tyler Capehart, in this case – who keeps them rooted firmly in hardcore punk territory, with his throat-shredding roar of a voice. Speaking of vocals, there are some great melodic ‘whoa-oh’ backing vocals on the likes of ‘Decayed’ and ‘Absolute Zero’ that remind us of The Offspring’s early days; indeed, if Dexter Holland’s crew had tried their hand at crossover thrash instead of torturing us with shit pop songs (‘Original Prankster’, we speak of thee), the result would probably sound quite similar to Forsaken Profits.
There aren’t any weak links on this album, but we especially like the way the atmospherics intro of ‘Chemical Burn’ gives way to some seriously nimble-fingered riffing, and the way closing track ‘Last Hope Down’ crams a two-step worthy mid-section in among the relentless ‘skate punk thrash metal’ (as the band themselves put it) action.
Did they name ‘Road Rash’ after the popular 90s motorcycle-racing video game? This album would certainly make a good soundtrack to driving insanely fast* with the police hot on your tail, and goodness knows I did plenty of plenty of that on the ol’ Sega Mega Drive back in the day. Anyway, that’s a recommendation, in case you hadn’t already figured it out. The smart money is on Forsaken Profits, and cheers, I’ll be here all night.
